About
‘Some artists spend their entire career trying to find a unique sound. Apostrophe and Rye has nailed it on the first go.’
Ian Kenny (Karnivool, Birds of Tokyo)
Paranoid Lullaby is a poignant, serenely powerful and uplifting contemporary folk album by Paul David-Goddard released under the name Apostrophe and Rye, a moniker evoking possession and omission, and tales shared over fine whiskey.
‘It started out as “music for therapy” and then snowballed.
The loss of love, the whimsy required to carry on, and the joy of finding yourself on the other side, all mixed up together in a bucket, and poured into a dozen songs.’
Paul David-Goddard
Dark and mournful at times, but with a strong vein of hope throughout, the album traverses bare-boned, classical nylon fingerpicking, resonant piano, soulful orchestral arrangements and a bevy of distinct sounds from around the world.
‘Most of these songs were written over the last four years, and then moulded and tweaked until my perfectionist brain was happy.
‘A couple of them, though, had been rattling around in my head, in one form or another, since I was about 14. It was wonderful to add a sprinkling of hindsight and finally give them a home.’
Paul David-Goddard
David-Goddard’s thoughtful compositions and quiet, profound vocals have echoes of Nick Drake, Iron and Wine, José González and Ásgeir, with a hint of Beck at his most wistful, and even a little early Enya for good measure.
Paranoid Lullaby was written, performed, recorded and engineered by Paul David-Goddard in Melbourne, Australia.
